- The FTC’s federal “click-to-cancel” rule never took effect. A federal appeals court (the Eighth Circuit) struck it down on procedural grounds in July 2025. In March 2026 the FTC started over, opening a new rulemaking and asking for public comment through April 13, 2026. A final rule is still likely a long way off.
- In the meantime, the FTC and state attorneys general have kept bringing enforcement cases in 2026 against subscriptions that are hard to cancel, using existing consumer-protection law.
- California’s expanded auto-renewal law (AB 2863), in force since July 2025, requires an annual renewal reminder and an online cancellation option for California customers. It also covers free trials that turn into paid plans.
What this means for you: cancelling online should be simple, and a plan that buries the cancel button is exactly what regulators are targeting.
Spotting a Charge You Don’t Recognize
